拯救红松鼠的漫长斗争:英国本土物种的最后防线
A hundred years ago, red squirrels were a common sight in the woods of Britain. With their bright fur and tufted ears, they darted between the trees in every county. Today, they have vanished from most of the country, and fewer than forty thousand are thought to remain in England.
The main reason for their decline is an unwelcome visitor. The grey squirrel, brought over from North America, is larger, tougher, and able to survive on food the red squirrel cannot eat. Worse, grey squirrels carry a virus that is harmless to them but deadly to their red cousins.
