The ocean covers most of our planet, yet we have explored only a small part of it. Recently, a global project called the Ocean Census set out to change that. In a single year, its teams described more than 1,100 species that no one had ever recorded before. That was a jump of over fifty percent compared with earlier years.

To find these creatures, scientists travelled to some of the most remote places on Earth. They lowered cameras and robots into deep canyons and into cold, dark water far below the surface. There, where almost no sunlight reaches, life turned out to be surprisingly rich. The researchers found strange shrimp-like animals, delicate corals, and tiny creatures shaped in ways no one had expected.
