The Butterfly That Navigates a Continent It Has Never Seen

Each autumn, millions of monarch butterflies in North America begin an extraordinary journey. They fly thousands of kilometres south to a small cluster of mountain forests, arriving at almost the same groves their ancestors used. What makes this feat astonishing is a single fact: no individual butterfly has ever made the trip before.

The monarch's life is far too short to allow learning by experience. The butterflies that fly south in autumn are several generations removed from those that flew north the previous spring. The knowledge of the route cannot be taught by a parent or copied from a companion. It must somehow be written into the insect itself.
