The Conversation Between Your Gut and Your Mood

We are used to thinking of the brain as the sole seat of our feelings. Yet a rapidly growing field of research suggests that our emotional lives are shaped, in part, by an unlikely organ: the gut, and the trillions of microbes that live within it. The old phrase gut feeling may be more literal than we ever imagined.

The gut is lined with an immense network of nerve cells, so extensive that some scientists call it a second brain. This system is in constant communication with the brain in the skull, sending far more signals upward than it receives in return. What happens in the digestive tract does not stay there; it ripples outward into how we feel and think.
