Peer review is supposed to slow science down in a useful way. Before a claim enters the record, other experts ask whether the methods are sound, the evidence is strong, and the conclusion is not larger than the data.
The system becomes weaker when status starts doing the work that evidence should do. A famous laboratory may be trusted too quickly. A junior critic may be ignored too easily. A paper from a prestigious institution may seem polished before anyone has read it carefully.
