For centuries, the icy inlets of western Norway teemed with European flat oysters, whose clustered shells formed natural reefs across the seabed. By the mid-20th century, however, overharvesting and pollution from coastal development had virtually wiped them out. What was once an underwater metropolis became a barren stretch of mud, and with the oysters vanished the water-filtering services they quietly provided.
Today a small team of marine scientists is working to reverse that loss inside the deep blue Sognefjord. Their project, dubbed Fjordskjell, grows juvenile oysters in a land-based hatchery near Austevoll, then transfers them into submerged cages suspended from floating platforms. The young mollusks are gradually released onto carefully prepared gravel beds, where they begin cementing themselves together to form the foundations of a new reef.
